Job Description

The Database Administrator (DBA) reports to the Database Administration Supervisor within the Infrastructure Planning Division. This position is responsible for providing technical support and guidance in the use of database related software. This position will be responsible for administration of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and up. The DBA maintains and utilizes a current, working knowledge of database administration to support the Enterprise databases and interfaces with vendor representatives in order to resolve issues with the assigned database and asked to assist with database planning, development and troubleshooting.

Minimum Job Requirements

Database Administrator I

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university (prefer degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, etc.) and a minimum of three (3) years prior experience in data operations, computer operations or application systems programming

OR

a minimum of five (5) years of prior experience in data processing, computer operations or application systems programming

AND

Minimum three (3) years previous experience with at least one programming language, as well as appropriate OS, utilities, shell scripts, visual editor, etc. for the assigned database.

One (1) year previous experience with Data Base Management Software (DBMS)

Must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and judgment skills in addition to organizational vision

Must demonstrate strong analytical and solution development skills

Prefer experience with Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan, health care industry, and specific information systems technologies and concepts which facilitate corporate information systems advancement.

Ability to work independently much of the time under general supervision

Internal Applicants - Must demonstrate ability to assume additional responsibilities and receive commendable rating on last performance evaluation. Contributes to Enterprise-related activities in support of the customer experience (documentation must be provided).

External Applicants - Must provide documentation from previous employer that demonstrates commendable performance in current job.

Database Administrator II
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university (prefer degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, etc.) and a minimum of three (3) years prior experience in data operations, computer operations or application systems programming

OR

a minimum of five (5) years of prior experience in data processing, computer operations or application systems programming

AND

Minimum four (4) years previous experience with at least one programming language, as well as appropriate OS, utilities, shell scripts, visual editor, etc. for the assigned database.
Two (2) years previous experience with Data Base Management Software (DBMS)
One (1) year previous experience in project management (through participation in full technical management of database components of large scale projects).

Must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and judgment skills in addition to organizational vision

Must demonstrate strong analytical and solution development skills

Prefer experience with Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan, health care industry, and specific information systems technologies and concepts which facilitate corporate information systems advancement.

Database Administrator III

OR

a minimum of six (6) years of prior experience in data processing, computer operations or application systems programming

AND

Minimum five (5) years previous experience with at least one programming language, as well as appropriate OS, utilities, shell scripts, visual editor, etc. for the assigned database.

Three (3) years previous experience with Data Base Management Software (DBMS)

Two (2) years previous experience in project management (through participation in full technical management of database components of large scale projects)

Must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and judgment skills in addition to organizational vision

Must demonstrate strong analytical and solution development skills

Principal Activities or Accountabilities (Essential Functions of Job)
1. Provide consultation and support to Applications Development areas regarding database and program design and implementation.
2. Assist other team members in providing 24-hour “on-call” support to Applications Development areas regarding databases, program design and implementation and performance.
3. Develop personal training objectives for obtaining further knowledge of the assigned database by evaluating and recommending new database technologies.
4. Participate in reviews to evaluate database performance and recommend solutions to ensure the effectiveness of scheme, tables, procedures and permissions.
5. Assist Lead DBA in the maintenance of the assigned DBMS-based application system and the associated security procedures.
6. Provide status reports to the Database Administration Supervisor for all active and scheduled projects.
7. Assist the Database Administration Supervisor with configuration management and database control programming.
8. Monitor production databases for space utilization and the need for design change or reorganization.
9. Define and allocate space for all test databases.
10. Assist Lead DBA and Database Administration Supervisor as needed in technical management of database components of large-scale projects.
11. Monitor standards and procedures to ensure recoverability and availability of production databases. Participate in disaster recovery testing efforts.
12. Perform any other job-related duties as required.

Salary Range

$62,400+
