About the Team

As a part of the Intl. Emerging Tech Team, you will work with stakeholders in various parts of the business (merchandising, supply chain, store operations, eCom etc.) to define their true problems and work with the Product & Engineering teams to build emerging tech systems to solve them. You will think constantly about the potential futures, the implications for Walmart, the right strategy and rally the organization to build/implement technology. 

About the Role

As a Lead Design Researcher, you will represent the perspective of our customers and associates to help support our strategic vision. If you are motivated to help teams understand complex areas of our business, being a Lead Design Researcher could be the fit you’ve been looking for. Research activities will span from generative work (field work, development of customer models, archetype building, UX) to evaluative work (usability studies, user testing, concept evaluation). Research studies will vary in scope from understanding underlying motivations and behaviors to understanding the how customer dialects vary across regions and modalities. 

You will help build industry defining reusable customer and partner facing services and products to drive differentiated experiences and revenue. You will be in the unique position to be of service to both our customers and our associates as a member of this organization supporting all international segments of Walmart. What you will do

  • Define, execute and invent research methods appropriate to the questions at hand, including but not limited to field research, lab studies and remote testing.
  • Help teams understand customer needs, attitudes, and behaviors through your research.
  • Create and execute against long-term research roadmaps that aligns to core Walmart principles and existing systems, then informs high-level business strategy and customer/associate experience goals.
  • You have relentless curiosity with the desire to understand the interconnectedness of people, decisions, and actions. 
  • Guide internal teams and partners to take action aligned with research findings – inspire them and help them internalize opportunities to delight customers and associates.
  • Provide mentorship in UX principles, Conversation Design, and Product to scale the practice of research within our team.
  • Provide thought leadership to product teams.
  • Build up repeatable research practices and resources that are leveraged within the Design Team.
  • Build and own various forms of communication in reusable frameworks on behalf of the team
  • Write narratives about the customer experience including understanding the tech solutions needed to create that experience.

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Partnering with our business teams/customers/associates to identify their underlying problems
  • Bringing Passion to ideate, plan, and build designs for emerging tech solutions
  • Conducting industry and competitive analysis to understand new technology offerings and tradeoffs.
  • Developing and enhancing products – you will conduct user testing and user feedback sessions to help influence the product roadmap
  • Defining vision and strategies for your product family, using domain expertise, internal and external best practices, identifying market opportunities, and building business cases
  • Building collaborative relationships with key partners
  • Being hands-on in analyzing data sets and designing solutions
  • Building clear and concise communication for our internal and external stakeholders to influence adoption

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required/MBA a huge plus!
  • 8+ years’ experience in design research
  • Data and Ethnographic Research-driven mindset
  • Sound business judgment as well as ability to think clearly, gather qualitative research, analyze quantitatively, problem-solve, scope technical requirements, and prioritize.
  • Must be able and willing to think and act strategically and tactically.
