As a Principal Architect, Software Engineering part of Sam’s Club, you will help guide the team, partner with our Infrastructure Team and other In Club Architects, to ensure we build quality, sustainable, scalable platforms for our products.

What you’ll do:

  • Oversees the development of conceptual, logical, or physical hardware and software designs by ensuring the integration of multiple processes (for example, business, application, technology, information).
  • Provide guidance and lead the creation and implementation of hardware and software technology solutions by reviewing current architecture roadmaps, and designing transitional roadmaps for future architecture, including managing cloud budget, and total ownership cost
  • Demonstrates and proves hardware or software technology concepts to other architects and management by working with engineers to design, develop and present the prototypes to other architects and leadership
  • Improves the hardware or software technology environment by utilizing industry research; researching the latest developments in hardware or software technology applicable to the enterprise; analyzing industry best practices; and benchmarking internal processes and solutions against industry technology and trends
  • Ensure Software Quality Engineering by keeping the engineers up to date on best practices, automated code testing, alerts, reporting, and taking a proactive approach to production running app support.
  • Identifies and implements strategies for service enabled technologies (for example, service-oriented architecture) by defining a set of principles and methodologies for designing and developing software in the form of interoperable services; defining business functionalities that are built as software components; and integrating widely disparate applications for a Web-based environment using multiple implementation platforms.
  • Develops and implements product development strategies using Agile development processes by using iterative and incremental development processes; collaborating between self-organizing, cross-functional teams for requirements and solutions; and promoting adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery for rapid and flexible response to change.
  • Drives the execution of multiple business plans and projects by identifying customer and operational needs; developing and communicating business plans and priorities; removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance; providing resources; identifying performance standards; measuring progress and adjusting performance; accordingly, developing contingency plans; and demonstrating adaptability and supporting continuous learning.
  • Work closely with the Program and Product Manager, and Scrum Champion to ensure engineering work is pointed and prioritized correctly.
  • Work Cross functionally with your Peers In Club Tech to leverage tools, code, and share ideas to improve all engineering work and be able to build relationships with other areas of the business (Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering Architects) and partner with them to build architecturally sound technical solutions for our Associates and Members
  • Assist in the development, training, and mentoring of associates by providing guidance, and building a team-based work environment; establishing performance expectations and working with Manager/Director on regular performance evaluations; providing recognition and rewards; coaching for success and improvement; and ensuring diversity awareness.
  • Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by training and providing direction to others in their use and application; ensuring compliance with them; and utilizing and supporting the Open-Door Policy.
  • Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost effectiveness; and participating in and supporting community outreach events.
  • Having several years of management experience of a tech team is helpful, but any management experience will do, as well as a solid knowledge base of process.
  • Familiarity in an Agile environment a plus
  • Retail experience a plus
