Job Description

The role of the Project Management Engineer is to plan, execute, and finalize projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. This includes acquiring resources, as well as guiding and coordinating the efforts of all team members in order to deliver projects according to plan. The Project Management Engineer must provide active management throughout a project’s life cycle and maintain excellent communications with management, team members and other stakeholders on the state of the project.

Essential Functions:

  • Strategy and Planning 
    • Define project scope, goals and deliverables in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders
    • Continually manage and effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders
    • Plan, schedule, and track project time lines, milestones and deliverables
    • Monitor team member's project progress and adjust as necessary to keep projects on track and ensure deadlines are met
    • Define project success criteria
    • Conduct project postmortems
    • Provide input into developing best practices
    • Assist in training of project managers
  • Acquisition & Deployment 
    • Determine and assist in acquiring necessary tools and personnel to achieve project goals
  • Operational Management 
    • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end
    • Prepare project plans and communications documents
    • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, and presentations
    • Pro-actively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, devise contingency plans
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities appropriately
    • Manage all dynamics of the project team; motivate, coach, mentor, resolve issues
    • Develop and grow business relationships vital to project success
  • Decision-making 
    • Make timely and appropriate decisions on the following (consistent with ArcBest Technologies standards, aligned with management goals and within parameters):
    • Design, coding, and testing techniques
    • Time management among projects
    • Scheduling and assignment of tasks
    • Scheduling appropriate meetings and presentations with business partners
    • Problem resolution and reporting
    • Delegating tasks

Qualifications

The Project Management Engineer position requires a minimum of a B.S. degree in a computer related field of study or equivalent experience. An MBA or the pursuit of an MBA is a plus.

  • Project Management Professional Certification or willingness to obtain PMP certification within 3-5 years
  • 4+ years of software development and/or project management experience
  • Keen desire to learn (and master) new things
  • Excellent team player with a positive company-attitude
  • Ability to lead a software development team
  • Ability to motivate and lead employees
  • Ability to evaluate team members’ performance throughout the project life cycle and provide effective feedback
  • Negotiation skills
  • Prior training and/or experience in any of the following would be beneficial: OOP, HTML, Visual Basic, CICS, Web and PC applications, COM objects, SQL, Active Server Pages, .NET
