Job Description

This position serves as the System Administrator for the IT Support Services Server Application, Server OS, or Server Monitoring teams. The System Administrator is responsible for installation, training, support, and maintenance of new and existing systems that involve the IT Support Services Server Administration Teams. This position also is responsible for assisting in the research of new server-based hardware and software products, which may provide solutions to Enterprise business problems. Additionally, the System Administrators provides and maintains an efficient level of service to the Enterprise through effective, continual, proactive monitoring and review. Primary job functions require exercising independent judgment in support of the Enterprise server infrastructure and applications and its users.

This individual also resolves server based problem and develops and monitors networked systems to productivity standards. The System Administrator performs in the capacity of a team member to provide support to other members of the Server Application Management, Server OS, and Server Monitoring teams.

Thorough knowledge of server-based architecture, planning, management, configuration, operations, and performance tuning are required. In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows and/or Red Hat Linux operating systems, TCP/IP protocols, DNS, storage subsystems, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery operations are required. The System Administrator may seek appropriate professional certifications, such as but not limited to Networking, Virtualization, or Microsoft certification in any of the current Windows operating systems and/or Red Hat Linux.

The System Administrator must provide good user support and have strong communication, technical writing, and documentation skills. In addition, the person in this position must have exceptional troubleshooting and problem resolution skills and demonstrate expertise with day-to-day server management and administration, including proactive monitoring and capacity planning.

Nature & Scope
Environment

This position reports to the Supervisor - Windows Administration. The Server Application, Server OS, and Server Monitoring teams within ITSS are comprised of teams charged with maintaining an effective and efficient server management process and performing the tasks associated with those processes. The Server Application, Server OS, and Server Monitoring teams also procures, installs, maintains, and monitors all aspects of the open system server environment. The System Administrator is expected to exercise excellent analytical and planning skills within a team environment and all server management processes in order to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The System Administrator is also charged with all ITSS server management activities, implementation, installation, and maintenance which can include Exchange, SharePoint, SQL, VMware, Citrix, and a wide variety of applications running on HP Servers running Microsoft Window Server OS or Red Hat Linux. The System Administrator is expected to exercise analytical skills within a team environment and all server management processes in order to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The System Administrator is also charged with ITSS server management activities, implementation, installation, and maintenance of hardware, operating system, and application software. This position is also responsible for patch management, anti-virus software, and securing all aspects of these systems.

Workflow
The System Administrator participates in the completion of server-related projects assigned to the Server Application, OS, and Monitoring teams, including routine responsibilities such as user-needs analysis, software and application installations, vendor product and service analysis, monitoring work progression, and participating in team meetings.

This position’s functions are also self-initiated as post-design and implementation procedures require ongoing research and monitoring of user operations to ensure continued efficiency in operations.
The System Administrator works closely with the Supervisor – Windows Administration, tracking and analyzing weekly and monthly project status and time reports.

Guidance
The System Administrator is directly guided by the visions and goals of the Enterprise, the Enterprise Mission Statement, the Supervisor – Windows Administration, and the management of the ITSS Server Application, OS, and Monitoring team. This position seeks input from internal business users in defining individual needs, and external service and supply vendors to determine product quality, efficiency, and availability. This position may also consult with other Enterprise technical administrators.

Challenges
Supporting and maintaining a 24/7 operational status of the Enterprise open systems environment is essential. The greatest challenge of this position is to accurately analyze a business user’s current operation, identify their short- and long-range technical business needs, and implement a viable, high-quality server-based solution. This requires that the System Administrator remain abreast of industry changes, enhancements, product capabilities, and availability.

Interfaces
The System Administrator reports directly to the Supervisor - Windows Administration and routinely interfaces with all personnel within the IT Support Services Division to assist in and provide guidance regarding the efficient use of the Enterprise Open Systems infrastructure and services. This position also takes direction from Lead System Administrators as appropriate.

The incumbent routinely attends and serves on task forces and committees designed to enhance the use of the Enterprise server infrastructure.

Externally, this position communicates regularly with vendors of server hardware/software and other sources of technical expertise.

Authority
The System Administrator has the authority to analyze requirements, and make recommendations to Lead System Administrator and internal business users on the procurement, installation, and use of server hardware and software.

This position is responsible for implementing efficient, standards-based corporate server solutions to Enterprise business problem.

  1. Perform all ITSS server management functions within ITSS including configuration, operations, installation, maintenance, and performance tuning of all server hardware and software.
  2. Be knowledgeable of and participate in the strategic planning process within ITSS in order to effectively develop and maintain successful server management processes consistent with ITSS goals and objectives.
  3. Research and implement server components including software, hardware, security, administration, policies, and procedures.
  4. Analyze and evaluate user requests for server and technical operations, services, and support.
  5. Update reporting mechanisms based on progression of projects.
  6. Function as a task force or committee member as approved.
  7. Perform technical duties assigned as a member of the Server Application, OS, and Monitoring team to enhance function and availability of the open system server environment.
  8. Monitor daily performance of systems and inform management of the status of the systems relative to previously established performance guidelines.
  9. Assist in the developing comprehensive policy and procedure documentation for the open systems server infrastructure.
  10. Interface with outside server vendors and consultants to ensure cost-effective open systems solutions.
  11. Remain abreast of industry changes and enhancements, as well as product capability and availability.
  12. Contribute to and support the Enterprise strategic and operational planning process to include total- quality management philosophies.
  13. Become knowledgeable of, and adhere to ABCBS Information Systems standards and policies.
  14. Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Job Requirements (Education and Experience)

System Administrator I

Bachelors Degree & minimum of three (3) years prior experience in data operations, computer operations or programming;

OR

A minimum of five (5) years of prior experience in computer systems, data operations or programming.

AND

Three (3) years minimum experience with server support and implementation - including maintaining and supporting open systems operating systems and client server based applications.

Three (3) years minimum experience with operations and procedures including configuring, tuning, monitoring, securing, and managing server software and hardware

System Administrator II

Bachelors Degree & minimum of four (4) years prior experience in data operations, computer operations or programming;

OR

A minimum of five (5) years of prior experience in computer systems, data operations or programming.

AND

Four (4) year minimum experience with server support and implementation - including maintaining and supporting open systems operating systems and client server based applications.

Four (4) years minimum experience with operations and procedures including configuring, tuning, monitoring, securing, and managing server software and hardware

System Administrator III

Bachelors Degree & minimum of five (5) years prior experience in data operations, computer operations or programming;

OR

A minimum of six (6) years of prior experience in computer systems, data operations or programming.

AND

Five (5) years minimum experience with server support and implementation - including maintaining and supporting open systems operating systems and client server based applications.

Five (5) years minimum experience with operations and procedures including configuring, tuning, monitoring, securing, and managing server software and hardware

Must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and judgment skills in addition to organizational vision.

Must possess strong writing, analytical, and grammar skills.
